Following the huge success of The Vampire Diaries and The 100, The CW was clearly expecting big things for its new drama The Messengers (starring Joel Courtney), which premiered April 17. Unfortunately, the network has decided to cancel the show after only four episodes, citing low ratings. Pilot episode "Awakening" brought in 1.19 million viewers in the United States, but subsequent installments "Strange Magic" and "Path to Paradise" only managed to draw 770,000 and 650,000 respectively. In contrast, The 100's second season routinely pulled in 1.5 million viewers each week, with The Vampire Diaries' sixth season averaging around 1.8 million viewers per episode according to Zap2it.

However, it's not all bad news. Fans can still expect to catch the rest of the season, which consists of 13 hour-long episodes. Meanwhile, creator Eoghan O'Donnell is hopeful that the series will find a home elsewhere, replying to a fan that a move to another network remained on the tables. We've been impressed with the show thus far, particularly by the performances of its lead actors. Shantel VanSanten has been memorable as protagonist Vera, while Jon Fletcher's turn as Doomsday preacher Joshua has had us terrified and optimistic by turns.
